Another Reason to Love the Rockies

After witnessing the brief God-encounter caught on mlb.com video at the end of the 6th inning of the Colorado Rockies-Los Angeles Dodgers (August 18, 2010) game, it is very difficult not to love this current Rockies baseball club – even when they don’t win but every other game.  What this video shows makes them a winner (everyday) in my book, and in the Book that really counts.   Link to video:  http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?content_id=11129057   Ignore the pesky commercial at the beginning.

What an athletic, gutsy, and aggressive outfield catch by Carlos Gonzales (Cargo) to end the inning.  NOPE – that is not the reason I am writing of my Rockies pride in this blog entry.  Although, Cargo’s spectacular over the shoulder catch and full-speed (n0-holds-barred) collision with the right field fence at Dodger Stadium is the reason mlb.com published the video in the first place.

The video is 3 minutes and 23 seconds in length. It shows the catch/collision from numerous camera angles and focal lengths – great camera work.  It shows the arrival of Cargo’s teammates, coaches, manager Jim Tracy, and the head (Keith Dugger) and assistant (Chris Gehret) athletic trainers to the side of the prone outfielder.  The video continues with Keith Dugger’s field examination and triage (pushing, pulling, poking and bending) of Cargo’s right leg. “Tell me when it hurts!”  Nope - my love for the Rockies organization was not stimulated by the well-qualified training staff and their rapid and concerned perusal of their star player’s possible injuries, while he lies on his back on the right field warning track in Chavez Ravine.

No, what amazes me is what the national camera captured, Keith Dugger, Jim Tracy and Scott Gehret doing just before they helped Cargo to his feet.  Video time that the event is captured between 2:05 and 2:17.  The event occurred in enemy territory, Los Angeles, California, in the middle of a televised National League baseball game.

Although I cannot read Dugger’s lips, it is as plain as day, that the 3 men are laying hands on Cargo and praying for him. The nerve!  Prayer can’t change the outcome of the game.  But it might heal Cargo’s injury.

You don’t believe me?  Why then, did Gehret re-kneel and place his hand on Cargo’s back?  Why did the field usher back-off, when Dugger bowed his head?

Awesome!  A team that not only talks the talk, but walks the walk.

Encore:  Are the Rockies not family?  Observe the concern on the faces of the Rockies bullpen pitchers: Huston Street, Joe Beimel, and Matt Belisle (video time 2:37-2:42).

  1. It was rather subtle.
